The 12-week program provides financial literacy and entrepreneurship training to single, low-income, enterprising mothers of Newark, NJ
On May 9th, Walker’s Legacy Foundation in partnership with the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation (NCEDC) announced the launch of Moms Who Hustle during a press conference at the Essex Community College of Newark, NJ. The financial planning and entrepreneurship program was announced by Honorable Mayor Ras Baraka; Founder and CEO of Walker’s Legacy Foundation Natalie Madeira Cofield; Acting President and CEO of NCEDC Aisha Glover; and Newark, NJ Council President Mildred Crump.
In its inaugural year, the 12-week program for single, low-income, and enterprising Newark mothers leverages an online and in person learning model guided by instructors in four additional communities including Washington, DC; Detroit, MI; and Baltimore, MD. locations. Accommodations for the cohort of mothers include on-site childcare, access to financial planning tools, entrepreneurial insight to begin self-empowerment, and additional resources that are accessible via the Walker’s Legacy App.
“Newark has many mothers, both married and single, who often have to be the central economic power in their families,” said Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “Others have dreams of owning their own businesses and becoming self-sufficient. But they often lack the resources, knowledge, and confidence to achieve these dreams and goals.
That is why we are privileged to partner with the Walker’s Legacy Foundation and proud to offer the ‘Moms Who Hustle’ program to empower our mothers with the many tools they need to become successful business owners and major factors in Newark’s economic growth.
Walker’s Legacy Foundation additionally hosted a “Mommy and Me” Networking Mixer at the Newark CEDC offices following the press conference to further connect Newark mothers to the resources, programs, and tools to reach entrepreneurial success and economic stability. Applications to join the Newark, NJ cohort of Moms Who Hustle are still being accepted. More information and applications can be accessed here.
