The Power of Social Media

Women of color are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in America, but how are we utilizing the power of social media to grow our brand and connect with customers?

Queen Bey definitely knows the power of social media, when she announced the release of her album to her 8 million Instagram followers and sold over 1 million copies in just over a week. Now that’s power in numbers!

Social media plays a vital role in building your brand. The benefits of utilizing social media for your business include: raising brand awareness, increasing website traffic and sales, creating an authentic relationship with customers for open communication and the opportunity of reaching new clients.

For most entrepreneurs and small business owners, the biggest challenge is finding where to start and how to find the time to post. In this article, I will be sharing a few tips on the importance of choosing the best platform and key strategies to creating an authentic audience.

Find your niche:

There are many channels to choose from, so first find your niche and determine which platform your customers use most. The top three social media platforms for business are Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Facebook is great for sharing events, articles and news. Instagram is all about capturing the perfect photos and now has the latest video feature, Instagram stories, which is a great way to interact with customers to show what a day in your life looks like an only lasts 24 hours. Twitter has a limit of 140 characters, so it is short and sweet. It is great for live tweeting, during events and sharing content through #’s (hashtags).

Post with a purpose:

Once you determine which platform(s) is best for your business; then, you can create content that relates to your brand and implement a strategy on how you will empower, educate and sell your product or service. Remember, to be personable, relatable and authentic through your content. A good starting point is sharing your brand’s story, mission and vision. Most importantly, live it!  Showcase what your business stands for, what your journey so far looks like and educate them on how to use your product or service and the benefits it offers.

Practice consistency:

Many people get caught up on how many times a day they should post, but it is all about the quality not the quantity. Posting consistent and transparent content is key. Whether it is daily or weekly, customers will begin to expect your posts. Be consistent with your fonts, aesthetics and messaging as well. Once you find your groove stick with it, cater to your audience and determine when your followers are online to post your most compelling content.

Plan for success:

During the week you have a million things on your to-do lists and can easily forget to post. So, take a day to gather content and schedule posts for the week. Utilize tools such as Hootsuite or Buffer to schedule posts for Facebook and Twitter. Instagram is the only platform where you can’t pre-schedule posts automatically, but gather your messaging and content so you won’t spend hours scrolling for inspiration on what to post.

Reach new heights:

Raise awareness of your brand by running ads on social media and connect with potential new clients. Facebook has plenty of options to curate who you want to attract from demographics to behaviors. This is where the importance of knowing your client pays off. Give yourself a monthly budget, determine your audience and measure the results from each post. The more data you receive, the better you can invest in who you want to see your posts.
