Walker’s Legacy Celebrates 10 Years of Empowering Women of Color in Business

Walker’s Legacy celebrates its 10-Year Anniversary as the premier organization and digital platform for women of color in business.

Founded in 2009 in Washington, DC, Walker’s Legacy began as a quarterly women in business lecture series designed to inspire women of all ages to walk into their professional passion and purpose. Named in honor of Madam C.J. Walker, the first self-made female millionaire in US history, Walker’s Legacy has evolved as a national professional collective and digital platform that promotes career advancement, skill sets, and networks of multicultural women in business and female entrepreneurs.

“Walker’s Legacy was birthed with a small gathering of women after I found myself in need of a female mentor during my first entrepreneurial venture,” said Natalie Madeira Cofield, Founder & CEO of Walker’s Legacy. “It’s incredible what we have been able to accomplish over the last decade. Our vision for the next 10 years is to establish a chapter in all 50 states and expand globally.”

In 2016, Walker’s Legacy established its nonprofit arm, Walker’s Legacy Foundation, to provide the entrepreneurial, financial, and professional support needed to improve economic prosperity and reduce economic inequality for multicultural women and girls through entrepreneurship training and business development programming.

A Decade of Partnerships:

In 2018, the organization was selected to receive the inaugural Women of Color in Business grant award of $400,000 from the Minority Business Development Agency for the expansion of its work. This award was extended for good performance in 2019.  Since inception, the organization has worked with an impressive list of corporate partners including Google, Paypal, HP, Wells Fargo, Capital One, Citibank, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, and Comcast, among others.

The work of the organization has been featured by Forbes, Black Enterprise, TIME, the Washington Business Journal, ESSENCE, the Huffington Post, Fortune, BET, TVOne, among other notable outlets. In 2019, Founder Natalie Madeira Cofield was named among the 100 Most Powerful Women in Business by Entrepreneur Magazine in the publications inaugural list of business women.

A Decade of Organizational Impact:

Since its founding, Walker’s Legacy programming has provided educational training to thousands of women across the country—resulting in more than $40 million in investments and loans and more than $150 million in successfully awarded corporate, state, local, government, and nonprofit grants and contracts.

Annually, the organization connects more than 5,000 minority women—representing a total network of more than 60,000 multicultural women in business across the nation through national and local affiliate conferences and business networking programming, which operate across its 10-city footprint which is set to rapidly expand.

Marking a New Decade:

This year, the organization launched City Directors in ten cities across the country and is currently recruiting for its second cohort of City Directors for ten additional markets, bringing the organization’s total reach to twenty (20) cities across the nation.

In 2020, the organization launched new initiatives including PROSPECTUS™ Business Accelerator in five (5) markets across the nation and is set to hold its first national conference, PLATFORM, on October 30 to 31, 2020 with additional celebration activities on November 1st, 2020 at the Watergate Hotel, among other notable initiatives.

Walker’s Legacy has a national team of roughly twenty members, all dedicated to the organization’s mission-driven programming to support women of color in entrepreneurship—making it one of the largest national teams with this exclusive focus.
