Walker’s Legacy Continues to Strive: LeBron James and Octavia Spencer Team Up For A Scripted Drama Based on Madam C.J. Walker

Madam C.J. Walker, a woman very dear to us, will have her story portrayed through a new scripted series.   NBA superstar LeBron James and Oscar-award winning Octavia Spencer are known to be working closely on this project.

Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, was a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist,  and the first female self-made millionaire in America after she launched a line of successful hair care products for black women.   Despite much tribulations in being the daughter of slaves, she worked endlessly to provide for her family for two decades as a washerwoman, earning $1.50 a week.   However, everything changed following Walker’s discovery of a revolutionary hair care formula for black women.   Around the time of her death in 1919, she had built a beauty empire from the ground up, having wealth that most black women believed to be unachievable.  Walker’s personal papers are preserved at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis. According to Investor’s, her legacy also continues through two properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Villa Lewaro in Irvington, New York, and the Madame Walker Theatre Center in Indianapolis.

According to Variety, the project will be based off the book “On Her Own Ground” written by A’Lelia Bundles, the great-great-granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker who will also be consulting through the process.   James will be executive producing along with his company, SpringHill Entertainment’s co-founder, Maverick Carter.

Warner Bros, ZeroGravity, and Orit Entertainment are said to be onboard with production as well.

James spoke with Variety and states, “I am really proud of this project and that SpringHill will be partnering with Octavia to tell this important story. Every American should all know the story of Madam C.J. Walker. She was an innovator, entrepreneur, social activist, and total game changer whose story has been left out of the history books. I hope this project lives up to her legacy with a story that will educate and inspire.”

SpringHill’s makes it a point to showcase hidden African-American figures who have dedicated their lives to giving back to their community and overall shaping American history. This company has been known for giving back. This past year alone, SpringHill donated $2.5 million to the Smithsonian’s Muhammad Ali exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

“It’s so exciting for all of us to keep building SpringHill, see it mature, and continue to find its voice. We are really focused on growing with authenticity and substance,” Carter said. “For us, this is totally about great stories and great partners. Partnering with Octavia to tell the story of Madam C.J. Walker is the ideal first project for SpringHill to take an important step into scripted drama.”

Netflix is accordingly “acting fast” on this project, hoping to have it under its multi-million streaming service.

We here at Walker’s Legacy are ecstatic and grateful for the opportunity to watch Madam C.J. Walker on our TV screens, and for the world to know a phenomenal woman.

On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker was written by Walker’s Legacy Advisory Board and Walker’s Legacy Foundation Board Member, A’Lelia Bundles. Bundles are the great-great-granddaughter of Madam C. J. Walker.
