The global impacts of COVID-19 are undeniable. As small businesses across the nation work to understand the short and long term implications on business operations, Walker’s Legacy is determined to provide a voice for the fastest growing entrepreneurial segment in the nation: multicultural women in business. As part of our continued commitment to elevating minority women-owned small businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19, Walker’s Legacy invited multicultural women small business owners across the United States to apply for the Walker’s Legacy Covid Relief Micro Grant through our COVID-19 Impact survey; the only survey conducted by minority women small business owners, for minority women small business owners.
After over one thousand responses to our survey, Walker’s Legacy is proud to announce the eight recipients of our COVID-19 Relief Micro-Grants sponsored by Gates Foundation.
These eight businesswomen of color reflect the essence of Walker’s Legacy. Together, we will continue to engage, uplift, and inspire our community.
Destiny Brewton: A House Called Hue
Established in 2016, A House Called Hue is an online marketplace, concept graphic design, and custom embroidered apparel for bespoke afro-inspired apparel and accessories. Destiny Brewton runs a one-woman production team that has serviced over 200 brands and thousands of orders across the United States. Based out of Atlanta, Georgia, A House Called Hue’s goals are to provide businesses of all sizes with ways to elevate their brand without breaking the bank.

Betty Gabriela Rodriguez: Amazona Foundation
Amazona Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization that empowers women, men and non-binary people to help them deepen their impact and achieve their full potential. They work to deconstruct harmful traditional gender roles attributed to men, women, people of gender and sexual diversities in society. They are currently focused on non-formal education initiatives in the community, ranging from women’s circles, monthly events open to the general public, workshops and digital content by building and engaging the community to take action for gender equity. Amazona Foundation is based out of Washington, DC.
Founder and Chair, Betty Gabriela Rodriguez, is a certified gender professional, Venezuelan lawyer and social economy specialist with more than 10 years of experience in legal advice and strategic coordination in private sector multinationals, international organizations, NGOs and academia; bringing research, analysis and project advice to improve human and institutional capacity.

Jamilah Jackson: Jaxon PR & Events LLC
Founded in 2018, Jaxon PR & Events has a focus of providing small businesses with quality public relations within their budgets. So often, budding entrepreneurs and nonprofits are overlooked by the bigger PR and creative agencies because they don’t have the budget to afford their services. However, this doesn’t make them any less worthy of top-quality public relations. Most recently, the company has incorporated virtual parties and party kits for guests. Clients can customize their virtual experience with a party kit to be delivered to their guest ahead of their scheduled event. This addition to the company’s offerings has been successful and most profitable during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company plans to expand this offering and market to neighboring cities and potential clients.
Charlene Donelson is a lifelong Detroiter, former program manager and youth development specialist. She has worked in various arenas such as education, youth development, workforce training, software development, and project and event management. With friends and family calling her the “Planner,” or “Resource hub,” she birthed S2 Services L.L.C. What started as a side hustle taking on planning for special occasions such as birthdays, travel trips, social gatherings, and such, Charlene was able to scale and pivot to assisting corporate and small business owners with projects and event tasks that their business does not have the capacity to complete.

Jovanka Ciares is a former entertainment executive turned Registered Herbalist, Wellness Coach, detox specialist, nutrition educator and author. Jovanka studied nutrition with best-selling author Dr. T. Colin Campbell at Cornell University long distance program and herbalism with revered doctor and herbalist Dr. Tieraona Low Dog. She teaches how to use botanicals as safe treatments for many conditions and offers workshops and speaking engagements in both English and Spanish.

Melissa Henderson: Violet Summer®
Violet Summer® is an urban literary publication and lifestyle brand. Established in 2015, their shopping platform’s aims to document the spirit and personality of Black culture through meaningful products that remind us of our history. The company’s mission is to promote and collaborate with creators around the globe and to support socially-aware readers.
Melissa Henderson, a writer from Philadelphia, with deep roots in Cape May, New Jersey created Violet Summer Zine, inspired by her summers spent with family at the shore. Melissa found a void of authentic storytelling featuring up & coming artists, writers and creators from around the globe, and felt boxed out of what mainstream wanted to read. Thus, Violet Summer was born. In addition to Violet Summer Zine, Violet Summer Shop was also born. In the words of Henderson, “It’s about creating a home. A sanctuary. These products are inspired by storytelling, our ancestors and are meaningful in every sense.”

Dr. LaTandra Blue received her Doctorate of Optometry degree in 2013 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. She has extensive knowledge in ocular disease, cataract and LASIK pre and post-op management, low vision, and pediatric eye care. Dr. Blue serves in the United States Army Reserve as a Captain in the Medical Service Corps, and is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Junior League of Birmingham.
