Founded in 2009, Walker’s Legacy, LLC is inspired by the ground-breaking accomplishments and powerful legacy of America’s first self-made millionaire, Madam C.J. Walker. Walker’s Legacy is a national organization headquartered in Washington, DC, collaborating with multi-sector partners to improve local outcomes primarily for women of color entrepreneurs. We are one of the longest-running and largest digital platforms that exist to inspire, equip and engage professional and entrepreneurial women of color through thought-provoking content and culturally responsive programming while building a socially connected global community.
What Do We Do?
Walker’s Legacy develops and produces a series of special events, resources, digital content, entrepreneurship curriculum, and advisory services to support the establishment, sustainability, and scale of businesses led by people of color. In July of 2021, Walker’s Legacy was awarded a five-year federal grant from the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) to expand our efforts into Alabama by way of our soon to launch the Alabama MBDA Business Center, opening in the fall of 2021 to support minority-owned and operated businesses led by both male and female founders.
Who Are We Seeking?
This is a new role, at a new facility, in a new city for Walker’s Legacy, so the ideal candidate will be a well connected, thought leader who is comfortable both leading and following, as well as building out strategy, work plans, and budgets; all while executing. We seek a collaborative go-getter who is driven by our mission and the desire to develop and execute meaningful solutions that directly support minority-owned, operated or led businesses. The ideal candidate will have technical expertise, a deep understanding of the needs of minority businesses in the metro Birmingham market, as well as, existing resources, programs, organizations, and policies that directly complement our efforts in Alabama.
In This Role You Will:
The Business Center Director will coordinate with Walker’s Legacy’s national leadership team to co-design, plan, launch and directly manage the day-to-day operations, staff, vendors, and success of the center per federal guidelines and our business center plan. This includes providing: 1) One-on-one technical assistance support with a focus on contracting, import/export, and access to capital; 2) the PROSPECTUS Business Accelerator program twice a year, which is an intensive multi-week business certification training; 3) Federal and corporate matchmaking and access to capital forums conducted quarterly; 4) Local business training workshops, presentations; and 5) Monthly entrepreneurship webinars and digital trainings designed to aid minority entrepreneurs in scaling small businesses through increased access to contracts and capital; 6) Tracking key performance metric data and center expenses to support the timely and accurate submission of all federal reports.
Program Development and Management – Ensure design, delivery, and quality of programs, products, and services are best in class
Work with team to develop new target areas and initiatives to serve client needs
Research and analyze clients’ industries for the purposes of connecting them with pertinent contacts, news, events, and other resources
Collect economic impact from clients, and when necessary, develop new and more effective techniques to enhance the collection process
Work with a team to develop and deliver workshops for clients with a specific focus on the needs of the local community
Work closely with contractors to deliver services to clients, develop strategies, create new programs and initiatives, market the center, and all other activities essential to delivering relevant and valuable programming and services to minority-owned businesses
Operations, Grants Management, and Administration – Effective steward and coordinator of internal records for expenditures and sources of revenue
Supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of the Business Center, including staff, contractors, and vendors
Develop strategies that stimulate the Center’s growth and relevance to clients, strategic partners, and stakeholders
Manage the Center’s budget and federal grant requirements
Work with the Managing Director to provide funders with required reports and other deliverables, and to assist in proposal development in response to RFPs
Review activity reports and financial statements to determine progress and status in attaining objectives and revise objectives and plans in accordance with current conditions
Advise, coach, develop, and retain Walker’s Legacy team members to ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate performance, to measure successes
Outreach and Engagement – Ensure the continued growth, success, and support of the Alabama MBDA Business Center from the local community through the management of strategic partners
Identify, recommend and support the recruitment of strategic leaders to serve as advisory council members and manage all aspects of the council
Actively participate in marketing and promoting the work and value of the Alabama MBDA Business Center
Represent the Business Center at various local and federal government events, meetings, and conferences
In conjunction with national leadership utilize external presence and relationships to garner new strategic multi-sector and multi-industry partnerships and alliances for the sustainability and scale of the center both monetary and non-monetary
BS in Business Administration or related field with a deep knowledge of entrepreneurship, minority businesses, and startups
7+ years of professional experience with demonstration of career growth and managing federal grants, operations, administration, managing teams, programs, and complex projects from conception to completion
Proven track record of developing and managing budgets of at least $500K with various sources of revenue
Successful experience and established relationships with public figures, corporations, clients, foundations, businesses, and stakeholders in the metro Birmingham community
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, project management software, virtual meeting platforms, and Salesforce or a comparable CRM required
Residency in the Birmingham Metro area and the ability to work on-location is required
Ability to work well under pressure, with short lead times
Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
Ability to manage multiple projects in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment
Proven ability to build team rapport and work effectively with varying personalities
Positive attitude with a strong dose of grit and the ability to not only identify issues but be solution-oriented
Compensation: The salary will be commensurate with the market and the selected candidate’s experience. Walker’s Legacy provides a monthly pre-tax healthcare allowance and a cell phone allowance.
