Meet Kiara Nelson, Student and Viral Social Media Maven

Kiara Nelson is a former Howard University student who has created popular YouTube channel mainly focused on HBCU life and natural hair. By capitalizing on her YouTube channel and social media savvy, Nelson has been able to foster relationships with Victoria’s Secret, Creme of Nature and various other companies. While Kiara will be leaving Howard for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, she plans to continue to document her journey through college.

Kiara began her YouTube channel nearly two years ago as an incoming freshman at Howard in order to keep friends and family back home in Illinois updated on her new life. Now, she has over 6000 subscribers from across the country and has launched her own LLC, Natural Boss Branding. Kiara’s ability to stand out and be engaging is responsible for this success.

“Be original, definitely,” said Kiara on creating a successful YouTube channel.

“Don’t hop on every trend out here, because it’s very transparent when you’re unoriginal or a follower.”

She also cautions anyone interested in starting a channel to be patient because building a strong brand takes time and commitment.

What’s most difficult for Kiara, she says, is always coming up with new, creative content as a college YouTuber when school is out for vacation. Kiara’s previous videos have included vlogs for major events like homecoming as well as regular days on campus, natural hair tutorials, advice and glimpses into her personal life.

Kiara’s success at creating an audience who not only cares about her content, but cares about her as an individual has proven her to be an upcoming media maven. While Kiara is still only a student she has moved into a position in her career where she wants to focus on helping other realize their dreams. Moving forward, Kiara plans to continue to share her stories through YouTube while trailblazing the media and communications industries.
