Per the nation’s voting results of the 2020 Presidential Election, former Vice President Joe Biden and California Senator Kamala Harris have earned their spot in the White House for the next four years. This election, similar to President Obama’s win in 2008, has marked another historical milestone for America; the election of the second person of color to a high political office position.
Vice President-Elect Harris has broken many glass ceilings with this victory. Senator Harris, a daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, has made her mark in American history as the very first woman and woman of color elected into the presidential office. The Howard University graduate is also the first VP to graduate from a Historically Black College or University. Harris is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Senator Harris, herself, entered the Presidential race this year along with Biden and a host of other Democrats. She eventually dropped out but was later selected by the Biden campaign to run alongside him as the Vice Presidential nominee. There’s no doubt that she was selected because of her persistent nature and progressive thinking. Here are a few key issues that the newly elected Vice President supports.
Harris has been a strong supporter of “healthcare for all” by vocalizing personal stories about her mother’s battle with colon cancer and her support for President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. She was among the first to support and vote for Senator Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All bill in 2017. In this presidency, Harris’ support for a universal healthcare plan will be on one of the first ticks on the Presidential todo list.
First and foremost, Vice President Harris is a woman and cares deeply about national women’s issues like education, national security, and healthcare. She has consistently supported pro-choice efforts and ideologies such as Planned Parenthood. “This is the sixth debate we have had in this presidential cycle. And not nearly one word, with all of these discussions about healthcare, on women’s access to reproductive healthcare, which is under full-on attack in America today”, said Harris during the 2020 Democratic primary debate.
As she reflected on the unfortunate events in Parkland, Las Vegas, El Paso, and many other cities, Harris has since supported a ban on high-capacity magazine assault rifles in efforts to keep communities safe from domestic terrorism and violence. In the past, she’s fought for reasonable gun safety laws with strict background checks and the renewal of the assault weapon bans.
