Walker’s Legacy Remembers Ruth Bader Ginsburg

On Friday, September 18, Ruth Badger Ginsburg, former associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, passed away from an aggressive fight against cancer.

Born in March 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, Ginsburg spent a lifetime against the face of adversity before being appointed a Supreme Court justice, where she successfully fought against gender discrimination and united the liberal section of the Supreme Court. In the 1970’s she directed the influential Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union where she led the fight against gender discrimination and successfully proclaimed six landmark cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Ginsburg took a wide look at gender discrimination and fought for men who were being discriminated against, as well as for the women left behind. She accepted Jimmy Carter’s appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 1980, where she served on the court for thirteen years until 1993, when Bill Clinton appointed her to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Looking back on her legacy, Ruth Badger Ginsburg was a pioneer for women’s rights across the nation. With her bravery, women in the US were given:

  • The right to obtain a mortgage without a male co-signer
  • The right to open a checking account without a male co-signer
  • The right to start a business without a male co-signer
  • The right to obtain a business loan without a male co-signer
  • The right to obtain a job without gender-based discrimination
  • The right to obtain/retain employment while pregnant
  • The right to obtain birth control without having to obtain a husband’s permission
  • The right to not be forced to provide proof of sterilization to obtain/retain employment
  • The right to pension benefits that are equal to male counterparts and coworkers
  • The right to equal consideration to be executors of their children’s estates

Today at Walker’s Legacy, we commemorate her hard work and bravery by remembering her legacy. Thank you RBG for all you have done, and for what your legacy will continue to do for women across the nation.

“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” – RBG
