Washington, DC — Walker’s Legacy is proud to announce its selection as the recipient of the Global Minority Women Entrepreneur Initiative competitive grant from the US Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA).

“Minority women are the fastest growing population of entrepreneurs. While many women are making tremendous strides in the business world, they still face obstacles as entrepreneurs,” said MBDA National Director Henry Childs, II. “MBDA has and will continue to advocate for growing women’s economic opportunities to empower women across the country to reach their economic potential.”

Through the partnership, Walker’s Legacy, a global platform for professional and enterprising multicultural women, will produce and implement programming designed to support business development and advancement amongst diverse women-led firms.  More specifically, Walker’s Legacy will implement entrepreneurship bootcamps, an online accelerator, business and technical workshops, masterclasses and pitch competitions to support women business owners across the nation.

According to MBDA, since 2007, women of color have started businesses at an unmatched rate. While the number of women-owned businesses grew 58 percent from 2007 to 2018, firms owned by women of color grew at nearly three times that rate. An estimated 5,824,300 women-of-color-owned businesses employ 2,230,600 people and generate $386.6 billion in revenue. Beyond the growing number of business enterprises, women reinvest approximately 90 percent of their earnings into their family and their communities, creating a unique multiplier.

“We are proud to continue to advance programming to support such a critical and vital economic community for our nation, multicultural women entrepreneurs,” stated Natalie Madeira Cofield, founder and CEO of Walker’s Legacy.  “Our partnership with the Minority Business Development Agency allows for us to continue, and more importantly expand this work.”

The award is part of roughly $13 million in grants released by the agency to fund and implement innovative projects in areas of entrepreneurship and business opportunities for minority businesses.

The award follows the recent naming of Walker’s Legacy founder and CEO, Natalie Madeira Cofield, entrepreneur, philanthropist and economic activist as the recipient of the agency’s 2018 Advocate of the Year Award.  The MBDA Advocate of the Year Award is presented to an individual or organization that has demonstrated significant accomplishment in advocating minority business enterprise as an economic force in the global economy.  The award is the highest level of recognition in the nation bestowed on a minority-owned business or firm by the U.S. Department of Commerce.
