Benedict College Names Dr. Roslyn Artis as 1st Woman President

On Friday, June 30th, Dr. Roslyn Artis was named the first woman president out of a 147-year history at Benedict College, a historically black college. Dr. Artis will take place as the 14th President starting September 1st, the school located in Columbia, South Carolina announced earlier this week.

Artis was previously the first woman president at Miami Gardens-based Florida Memorial University starting back in 2013 before accepting her offer at Benedict. During her tenure, Artis is credited with much of the school’s success such as the expansion of the online education program provided, providing new majors within major fields, and oversaw the integration of a science, athletic, and wellness center, Benedict said. Artis is also credited with beseeching and later on receiving the largest gift from a single donor ($3.8 M) in the history of FMU.

With many other accomplishments, Artis had also managed to increase unrestricted gifts by 20% every single year and 38% for restricted gifts at FMU, Benedict noted.

Dr. Roslyn Artis is a true inspirational scholar in which she is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where she earned a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Policy. She also has a Juris Doctorate degree from West Virginia University College of Law, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from West Virginia State University. It doesn’t stop there; Artis additionally holds a Certificate of Fundraising Management from Indiana University and a Certificate of Mastery in Prior Learning Assessment from DePaul University, according to Benedict College.

“President Roslyn Clark Artis is a visionary leader who knows how to innovate programs and connect academics to service,” says Dr. Ivory A. Toldson, the former executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
