Member Success Profile: Terry Pierre, Founder of The Austin Socialite

Walker’s Legacy Profiles recognize unique women of color in business who embody the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker, the first female self-made millionaire. In this installment, meet Terry Pierre.

Terry Pierre graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, with a B. S. in Corporate Communications and certification in Business Foundations. She is the founder of The Austin Socialite, the largest platform for urban events, news and culture website resource for the city of Austin. She also co-owns E’Lon and Company, a digital and branding firm, alongside her fiancee who is a web engineer.

Describe a day in the life of Terry Pierre:
“I normally start my days at 6am. I begin with a 20-30 min meditation, consisting of thankfulness for another day, visions of what I want the future of my day and life to look like, and sheer enjoyment of silence. Monday through Thursday I do (YouTube) workouts for about 30 min.

After that, every day is a brand new day with brand new challenges. I re-check my calendar, and send reminder emails of all set appointments and meetings for the day primarily pertaining to The Austin Socialite & E’lon & Company.”

When did you see the turning point to create your own business?
“For E’lon & Company, the turning point was a very slow and gradual process, that’s lasted over the time span of 4 years. We had to build our portfolio and that started from creating free sites for friends and family, which lead to higher paying web clients, then contract work, then work with Universities, government bids, and the largest telecommunications companies in the world.”

As for The Austin Socialite, the concept of promoting urban events, curating social experiences and marketing businesses and socialites in the community shot off like a rocket from the first launch. The immediate success is due to the strong work ethic that Pierre possesses, along with the creation of strategic plans of action that engaged their audience.

What words of encouragement do you have for entrepreneurs who are looking to create their own business?
“I encourage entrepreneurs to grow thick skin. The life of entrepreneurship is a very long, painful, slow-to-see-results journey. You will have to fight every day to make your dream a reality. You will fail, and fail and fail again. But with every fall, you’ll gain strength and endurance. Your expertise in that respective field will sharpen and your value will raise.”

What is your favorite quote/motto?
“People do not decide their futures. They decide what they will do today and what they do today will decide their future.”

How do your remain true to your purpose?
“I remain true to my purpose by truly listening and moving by way of my inner-compass. We’ve all been given very specific gifts in life. I stay in tune with myself about the strengths and weaknesses that have been bestowed upon me. I use my tools and sharpen them daily. From this, I follow the visions that I receive as assignments on how I should live, and what I plan to create, achieve and give to the world before leaving this earth. I then take every day as an opportunity to work toward those goals. Staying true to your purpose means staying true to yourself and your abilities, not anyone else’s. Too often I believe we miss our purposes by studying and desiring other peoples’ gifts.”

What is your biggest motivation?
“My biggest motivation is being the best me that I can be for my family, friends, and community. I want to be an example of what perseverance, faith, love and hard work looks like.”
