Executive Director of Women’s Business Center of North Carolina Roberta McCullough

Roberta McCullough is the Executive Director of Women’s Business Center of North Carolina, where McCullough leads her team to empower women-owned businesses in 52 countries, and offers tools to support and establish new business, and generate growth. Roberta is no stranger to taking lead, as she has served in leadership roles for nonprofit organizations for the past 30 years. In many ways, Roberta work is dedicated to supporting small businesses.


Roberta McCullough is a native of North Carolina where she impacted many. From a young girl, McCullough knew her purpose in life, to help people who looked like her succeed financially. In high school, she was an active member of the school’s NAACP program. She began her financial endeavors when she attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1979. Later, she would attend Shaw University and receive her Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics where she was a member of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. McCullough’s first job was at her local McDonald’s handling money as the cashier. She would then work at her first bank Mutual Community Savings Bank from 1994 to 1997. There, she managed a full-service retail branch located in a high traffic area of an urban town and led a team of five through daily operations. Her next few endeavors before being an Executive Director of Women’s Business Center of North Carolina would be a Regional Director at Self Help, VP of Business Services at the Support Center, a Financial Coach at World Financial Group, a Business Development Consultant, and even a Mathematics Teacher for a high school. Roberta’s work history has been centered around mathematics leading her to the Women’s Business Center of North Carolina where she shares her experience and knowledge to help upcoming and existing small businesses.

Now, as an Executive Director of Women’s Business Center of North Carolina, her mission is to enable and empower women entrepreneurs through advocacy, outreach, education, and support. At the Women’s Business Center they seek to promote economic self-sufficiency for all women in North Carolina through entrepreneurship. The Women Business Centers across the country are resource partners of the Small Business Administration. Over 30 years ago, they were founded with a pursuit to empower women to pursue a career in entrepreneurship. It was only natural that Roberta joined as she is in full support of women as an integral part of the growing economy and as employers.


Roberta McCullough inspiration behind her career is her two sons. She was driven because she wanted to make sure her sons knew how to manage their finances and were encouraged and empowered to be entrepreneurs. Her drive behind her career would soon blossom as her two sons pursued entrepreneurship! She mentions her biggest accomplishment is hearing from her clients from past years and knowing they are still doing well. It makes her feel as though she was part of their success. Roberta’s advice to readers is to not doubt yourself. If the inspiration was placed in your heart and mind, you are already equipped to complete the task.

Nia Ross

Nia Ross is a junior at Virginia Union University, majoring in Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. Ross has contributed to programs such as, PBS Production U as a Videographer and Editor and the media organization at Norfolk State University, National Broadcasting Society Alpha Epsilon Rho. Since then, Nia has developed her own businesses. One, “Shot By Miss Nini Michelle” where she provides photography, videography and editing services, and the other, ”Nini Michelle Cosmetics”, where she distributes makeup and beauty products. Nia's purpose with her businesses are to enhance and inspire the expression of beauty and confidence within individuals.
