Success Profile: Michaela Angela Davis: Magazine Editor, Activist, and Writer

Walker’s Legacy Profiles recognize unique women of color in business that embody the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker, the first female self-made millionaire. In this installment, meet Michaela Angela Davis !

Wonder woman Michaela Angela Davis is a magazine editor, activist, and writer born in 1964 in Germany. When she was young, she moved to Washington, D.C. where she attended the Duke Ellington School for the Arts then enrolled in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her aunt, former stylist for Harper’s Bazaar, is where she inherited her passion for fashion.

Following being hired as associate fashion editor for Essence magazine, she moved on to become the founding fashion director for Vibe magazine and CEO of Honey magazine. In 2005, she launched the “Take Back the Music” campaign along with Essence and wrote a gift book entitled Beloved Baby: A Baby’s Scrapbook and Journal. In 2008, she also was featured in the documentary The Souls of Black Girls, as well as the BET special, Hip Hop vs. America II: Where Did the Love Go? Davis went on to become the chief creative consultant and editorial brand manager for the rebranding of BET.

Davis recently honored Women’s History Month by delivering the keynote address at the 31st Annual Madam C.J. Walker Luncheon hosted by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc.’s Pennsylvania Chapter this past weekend.

“She (Madame C.J. Walker) made black women entrepreneurs — and that’s why Black women, to this day, are more entrepreneurial than any other group in the population. She was an activist; she challenged Jim Crow laws; she was a big anti-lynching activist and she petitioned the president. She was a #BlackLivesMatter movement leader back then”

Currently, Davis works for BET as their editorial brand manager while mentoring many young women of color. She continues to appear on MSNBC, Fox, MTV, VH1, BBC, NBC, and ABC, among others leading conversations for student audiences on campuses around the country, including Howard University and Spelman College.

On top of all her successes, she made time to create MADFREE: Liberating Conversations About Image Beauty and Power, a multi-platform conversation project featuring extraordinary women.
