Success Profile: Olympia Auset, Founder of SÜPRMARKT

After graduating from Howard University in Washington, D.C., Olympia Auset moved back home to Los Angeles and was inspired to entrepreneurship to solve for the disturbing trend she noticed upon her return.

South Los Angeles has roughly 1.3 million residents but only 60 grocery stores.   Compounding the high resident-to-grocery ratio is the lack of grocery stores that offer healthy food options.  Such limited access to food and produce classifies South LA as a food desert.   And, living in a food desert proved to be a challenge for Auset’s vegan diet.

In July 2016, Auset founded SÜPRMARKT. The organic grocery source serves areas in South LA that don’t have readily accessible organic produce. SÜPRMARKT also aims to teach people about living a healthier lifestyle.

Auset told Walker’s Legacy, “We tend to focus on things like police brutality, prison injustice, education and politics, but food is at the base of all of those things. More people are killed by diet related disease than any of those other causes, but food is the one thing we have control over. Everyone can change what’s on their plate.”

The main thing standing in the way of people looking to “change what’s on their plate” in places like South L.A. and urban communities across the country is accessibility. By bringing organic produce to food desert areas at affordable costs and accepting EBT, SÜPRMARKT has been able to sell 500 cases of fruits and vegetables in only one year.

During her time at Howard, Auset attended a weekly event called Power Study Group where she learned about healthy eating, among other topics. Those lessons have played a major role in shaping both her professional and personal life.

Today she has made sustainable living both a lifestyle and a career. However, Auset finds her balance between work and personal growth through meditation, appreciating the moments in life when there seems to be no pressure and by trusting in those around her rather than relying solely on herself.

Moving forward, SÜPRMARKT’s goals include continuing to teach people about healthy eating, as well as helping them to become responsible consumers. From promoting veganism to teaching people to compost, SÜPRMARKT is committed to the idea of a holistically healthy life.
