The Young Women Behind The Girls Summit: How She Built It

Girls Are The Future

Research conducted in 2018 by Junior Achievement and Ernst & Young LLP (EY) shows that 41 percent of teens would consider entrepreneurship as a career option, as opposed to working a traditional job. When further exploring those numbers they found that 61 percent of teen girls have thought about entering entrepreneurship, compared to 54 percent of their male counterparts. However, it was found that 6 percent of teen boys have already started a business, while only 4 percent of girls have done the same. Creating enrichment spaces for girls is one way to increase that 4 percent. This is why Walker’s Legacy and the Walker’s Legacy Foundation, present A Girls Summit: How She Built It and Girls Who Enterprise: A Four Week Bootcamp.

Girls Summit: How She Built It

A Girls Summit: How She Built It is a one-day event that will feature five young women who are entrepreneurs of color on the fast track to success. Walker’s Legacy created this event for the purpose of showcasing the stories of these powerful ladies as they give useful advice and motivating lectures. This event will include sessions centered around what it takes to succeed as a young multicultural woman in the business world. Attendees will partake in interactive activities and discussions addressing skills vital to the success of a young entrepreneur; such as leadership, self-actualization, public speaking, and self-advocacy. This event is open to all girls aged 12-18.

Featured Speakers For The Summit Include:

Mikaila Ulmer is the founder of Me & the Bees Lemonade. Mikaila founded her company after a bee sting which prompted her fascination with insects. Me & the Bees Lemonade engages in philanthropy through investing a portion of the profits from the sale of her lemonade to organizations fighting hard to save the honey bees. Mikaila has also since established The Healthy Hive Foundation, a non-profit organization that advocates for the bee population through research, education, and preservation.
Tamani Lyn is an accomplished public speaker, mentor, and entrepreneur. Her brand, WOMEN OF LYN is a women’s empowerment organization dedicated to uplifting and empowering all women to be bosses through support and networking.
Jasmine Snead is a visionary entrepreneur and one of the founders of Aurora Tights. This University of Maryland graduate student is on a mission to inspire and uplight female athletes of color. The creation of the brand was inspired by the need for dancewear in various shades of nude to match the complexion of brown skin girls.
Kheris Rogers is the co-CEO and clothing designer of Flexin’ My Complexion. The clothing line is the result of Rogers being bullied by peers for her dark brown skin. Kheris quickly changed the narrative when the affirmation she recited daily “flexin’ my complexion” became a popular slogan. Kheris then created a clothing line featuring her newly coined slogan that would soon be popularized by celebrities such as Lupita Nyong’o and Whoopi Goldberg. Kheris Rogers remains the world’s youngest NYFW designer.
Taleah Elliott is an author, professionally-trained child model, and award-winning young dancer. She began her modeling career appearing in ad campaigns for the Strong National Museum of Play and Fisher-Price. She has studied jazz, ballet, tap, and hip-hop dance. She has won many trophies, including a 2018 Starbound Judges Award for her solo dance routine and a 2019 Countdown 1st Place High Gold for Solo Dance. By five years old, Taleah’s love for storytelling and fascination with books spawned her first self-published book, Puppy Love, a story highlighting the value of love.
Registration is open now through July 16th, the day of the event. The Summit will kick off Walker’s Legacy Foundation Girls Who Enterprise: A Four Week Bootcamp For Girls, which will take place from July 28th to August 20th.
