Actress Yara Shahidi Speaks on Lack of Diversity in Entertainment

In this installment of #BlackGirlMagic, actress Yara Shahidi uses her platform to discuss one of the most pressing issues in entertainment.

Most recognizable for her role as Zoey on Black-ish, actress Yara Shahidi received an honor for her philanthropic work from from Points of Life, an organization dedicated to volunteerism and service. Shahidi used the conference platform to speak about the importance of diversity and inclusion in entertainment.

“I’ve been an actress for over ten years, but more importantly, a budding humanitarian and activist”


In her address she explained that media is the avenue in which many are introduced to various cultural groups. She further discusses that because of this, the roles minority actors are given and portray often transform into reality for its viewers, further highlighting the importance of change agents of color both in front (and behind) the camera.
