Recap: Campus Power Moves Tour | Howard University & Spelman College

Walker’s Legacy and the Walker’s Legacy Foundation kicked off their Campus Power Moves tour on the historic campuses of Howard University and Spelman College. The events featured accomplished alumnae of the respective institutions from an array of industries including fitness, beauty, media, and entrepreneurship.

The programs also introduced the Walker’s Legacy Collegiate Chapters to both campuses. Collegiate chapters of Walker’s Legacy allow students to explore opportunities and gain exposure to entrepreneurship and professionalism by providing programming and resources focused on female students of color on campuses nationwide.

Howard University – October 20, 2016

On Thursday, October 20, 2016, Walker’s Legacy kicked off the University Women Campus Power Moves Tour at Howard University in Washington, DC.

The panel discussion, moderated by Tisha Lewis, reporter and anchor for Fox 5 DC, focused on ways to achieve success both on campus and in career. The relatable discussion provided an inspiration, knowledge, and advice to its attendees. The featured panelists provided insight on the importance of taking advantage of professional opportunities while on campus and how to begin preparation for career and entrepreneurial success while in school.

Panelists included Debra Oh, Senior Editor and VP of International Operations for The Shade Room; Sharon Renee, Founder and CEO of Sharon Renee Cosmetics; Brit Fitzpatrick, Founder and CEO of MentorMe; and Taryn Finley, Associate Editor, Black Voices/The Huffington Post, who virtually joined the conversation from New York City.

Spelman College – November 1, 2016

On Tuesday, November 1, 2016, the Walker’s Legacy Team, in partnership with the Spelman Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women, took the tour to Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. The Campus Power Moves Panel featured five alumnae who have found success in a number of areas including media, the nonprofit sector, and fitness.  

The discussion was moderated by the reigning Miss District of Columbia and 2014 graduate of Spelman College, Cierra Jackson. The expert panelists included Maura Chanz, Founder and CEO of Glitter & Hustle; Kabrillen Jones, Program Associate with the Walker’s Legacy Foundation; Kelly Smith Beaty, Founder and CEO of The Girl Power Agency; Rebecca Colett, Founder and CEO of The Vibe Ride; and Jaunice Sills, VP of Program Scheduling & Promo Strategy at REVOLT TV who joined virtually from Los Angeles, CA.

The advice given to the attendees explored ways that the Spelman network and resources can be instrumental in career success on and off campus. The featured speakers spoke to the importance of fostering an entrepreneurial mindset while in school by creating and taking advantage of professional opportunities.
